People in Michigan can now legally bet on sports! Sports betting in Michigan became legal in 2019, and in March 2020, the first retail sportsbooks opened.
But Michigan is just starting out. Michigan online sports betting, online casino, and poker apps were released at the beginning of 2021. It's currently a great time in Michigan to become a gambler!
In only a few peninsulas in the U.S. can you find such a large selection of sports betting apps and websites. While you need to be geographically located within the state boundaries of Michigan to bet (sorry, former Michiganders!), you don’t need to be a current resident.
Thanks to governor Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan Gaming Commission, and other legal and governmental entities, online sports betting in Michigan and online betting will only expand. While several casinos have expanded their offerings to online sports betting, it shouldn’t be long until there are even more options for placing bets on major league, minor league, local, and international sports.

Retail sports betting commenced in two out of the three commercial casinos on March 11. These were the MGM Grand and Greektown Casino. And now, a total of three commercial casinos are equipped with retail sportsbooks, including MotorCity Casino & Hotel as the latest addition.
Operators will collect their 8.4% gross sport wager receipts; however, commercial casinos will be imposed an additional 1.25% Detroit city tax. The entire plan of expansion of the gambling industry is expected to contribute $19 million in additional state revenue, including $4.8 million increments for the School Aid Fund.
Some of the world's biggest game operators operate and manage most of the land-based sports betting in Michigan. So, it is expected that businesses like MGM and Caesars would find it profitable to enter into the lucrative world of sports betting.

Gun Lake Casino is the latest addition to the list of Michigan's sports betting operators. On October 3, Stage 131 Sportsbook and Lounge formally opened.
In Michigan, there are 8 tribal sportsbooks and 12 sportsbooks overall.
PointsBet and The Stars Group established land-based relationships with Michigan properties at the beginning of 2020. Two deals have taken place: PointsBet with the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians for 20 years and TSG with the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians.
PointsBet plans to set up its app under its own brand and online casino through its collaboration, currently waiting to receive regulator approval. It will also power Watersmeet's retail sportsbook. The Stars Group will be heading for Michigan with its FOX Bet brand.
Scientific Games partnered with FireKeepers Casino Hotel to give life to power sports betting and iGaming later in the month.
Toward the second half of February, the bookmaker William Hill announced an alliance with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians to manage both a sportsbook at Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel and a satellite facility at Leelanau Sands.
Michigan online sports betting fans can now place their bets online with some of the best sports betting sites on the market.
Many large sportsbook firms have ties to Michigan casinos — a move that is vital to any sportsbook that is planning to open in the Wolverine State. While the apps abide by Michigan-specific rules, there will be several state-to-state overlaps.
Most online sportsbooks launched in January of 2021, and we can only hope there will be more openings as the sports betting market expands.
You may recognize the name Golden Nugget. That’s because this casino is one of the most famous historic off-strip casinos in Las Vegas — and it has an equally popular sister casino located in Atlantic City.
The Golden Nugget has recently gotten into the online gambling world, too, dominated casino gaming in several states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and now Michigan! It has also launched a sportsbook. Michigan online sports betting reviewers love the company’s online platform, including its mobile app and browser interface.
We’re excited to see more of this famous brick-and-mortar casino in the online gaming space. Learn more about Golden Nugget MI Bonus Codes here.
DraftKings has moved on in recent years from serving as a mere DFS supplier.
The company's revolutionary sportsbook software, which auto-personalizes the player's experience, is responsible for a good part of this alteration.
The DraftKings MI software is straightforward and user-friendly. It’s become increasingly popular for its many features, including live betting, competitive odds, and exciting promos.
We’re on the edge of our seats, waiting to see what this online betting company has in store for promotional offerings in the coming months — and to see whether the platform will expand to other markets as well.
If you gravitate toward online sports betting promos with plenty of promotional offers and personalized experiences, you should check out DraftKings.
In Michigan, DraftKings is working with Michigan with the Bay Mills Indian Community.
In the sports betting area, FanDuel has rapidly become a superpower. Get the best Fanduel MI Welcome Bonus Here.
The betting platform offers easy browsing, a tidy interface, and some of the industry's most consistent promotional offerings. Michigan online sports betting reviewers love the platform’s user experience and trendy, clean design (not something that every sports betting website considers).
Not only are the user experience and design popular, but bettors flock to this online gaming site for its many features, including single-game parlays. Michiganders that live for promotional offerings, including sign-up bonuses, odds boost, and seasonal, weekly, and monthly offerings will want to check out this site, too.
In our humble opinion? It's one of the most perfect platforms on which to wager money.
FanDuel has collaborated in Michigan with MotorCity Casino.
The Stars Group (PokerStars' parent company) and media-giant Fox Sports collaborated for the joint project of Fox Bet. Without precedent, the combined effort has built an app that integrates sports betting and media. Fox sports stars engage on-site and on-air frequently with on-site bettors with advice and advertisements. In Michigan, Fox Bet is associated with the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. BetMGM is (of course) MGM Resorts International's online sportsbook.
As the Detroit MGM property is already in existence, BetMGM is not unexpectedly soon to be one of Michigan's leading sportsbooks and online casinos. In fact, a lot of betting choices and convenience await players visiting BetMGM MI.
It won’t take much effort for this sportsbook to dominate the betting market here in the Wolverine State. It offers betting on pretty much all major sports and some smaller, local sports, too.
The one downside to this platform (for now) is that developers haven’t yet updated the platform with all the bells and whistles that can be found on competitors’ sites. The user experience isn’t as stellar as on other sites, and the design isn’t as streamlined as some others, either.
Yet, that doesn’t mean you won’t have a great time betting on sports on this site!
And what it lacks in online flashiness it makes up for at its brick-and-mortar location in Detroit. The BetMGM Lounge at the MGM Grand Detroit has become a hotspot for sports fans. This brightly lit lounge has a streamlined design and is stocked with large-screen TVs and outfitted with dozens of comfy leather chairs.
A relatively newer sports betting operator in the U.S., PointsBet only entered the market in 2019. Yet, this Australian sportsbook operator has become a leader in American sports betting in the past few years.
The company’s iconic betting type; PointsBetting, integrates the standard points spread bet with a multiplier, which can mean huge gains for players. As you might guess, this company is one of the few that focuses mainly on sports betting. (Most online sportsbooks focus on casino games and slots mainly and sports betting as a secondary form of gambling.)
PointsBet MI is also one of the country's most receptive sportsbooks and is more than willing to collaborate with players to make bets as per their preference.
We have to admit that we’re excited to see more of this sports betting company and hope that it expands to other markets throughout the country.
The Lac Vieux Desert Band of Michigan's Lake Superior Chippewa Indians is joined by PointsBet.
William Hill is one of the world's leading providers of international sportsbooks. The same company that has dominated the international sports betting scene is also now available in the U.S.!
With decades of experience, serious bettors will find competitive lines and a seamless William Hill software experience. Both Apple and Android users can use the software. William Hill is associated with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians in Michigan.
The one downside to William Hill MI (for now) is that the platform doesn’t offer as many sign-up bonuses, promos, and deposit match offers like most other online betting sites. Hopefully, the company will expand its promotions to keep up with its competitors; yet, for now, bettors that are loyal to the William Hill brand will still enjoy its large selection of betting options and
BetRivers is another casino that has been making waves in the online sports betting world. While it isn’t as big of a brand name as Golden Nugget or MGM, it’s been carving out its own little niche in markets, such as New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The company has gotten great reviews for customer service, website functionality, and promotions.
Like many of the larger casinos, BetRivers MI has a rewards program, iRush Rewards, that allows players to rack up loyalty points with every bet made — which can then later be cashed in for free plays, turning into even more opportunities for a cash-out!
BetRivers is working in conjunction with the Little River Casino Resort in Michigan to offer all Michiganders the chance to place bets on local and national sporting events.
WynnBet is another famous name in in-person casino betting! Its brick-and-mortar location in Las Vegas is one of the most stunning hotels and casinos in Sin City.
Now, residents can get a similar experience with online sports betting in Michigan with its website and app.
WynnBet MI has partnered with the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Michigan to bring its high-end gaming experiences to the Wolverine State.
We happen to love online sports betting! Yet, there are some clear advantages and disadvantages to using online sportsbooks and sports betting apps.
While sports betting apps offer players the freedom to place bets from the comfort of their own homes (or really anywhere!), they probably won’t replace an in-person casino experience anytime soon — though they have offered a comfortable alternative to in-person gaming during the pandemic.
Other than losing out on the in-person experience (sorry, sports betting apps can’t replace the experience of watching a race at the track or enjoying a five-star meal in a casino hotel), most apps provide the same type of betting experience players would find in a casino.
Some of the advantages of sports betting apps include:
Increased versatility of existing available bets and bet forms
Unparalleled comfort for players who are reluctant or unable to go to retail locations
Exciting game selection and impressive site and app interfaces
Good organization of games and betting types
Some of the disadvantages of sports betting apps may include:
An online experience can’t replace the ambiance of a brick-and-mortar casino
Apps can take up a large amount of memory on a smartphone
Slow internet connections can cause sluggish or sporadic lags in betting
No social contact or involvement through apps
Michigan laws explicitly included provisions in the state’s gambling expansion to motivate players to register remotely. Therefore, you can log in and play every legal and regulated Michigan sportsbook in the state as long as you are within state borders.
However, you must be geographically located within state lines. Both state laws and the operators themselves will insist on monitoring where you are geographically when placing bets online.
Sports betting platforms use geolocation verification technology to ensure you are where you say you are. The sportsbook will calculate your exact position through your phone’s onboard GPS.
Believe it or not, the geolocation tech is very reliable. You would never be able to circumvent location monitoring even if you stood on the state line.
If you live in Michigan (or are just visiting), get ready to experience all the fun of betting on sporting events — right from the comfort of your own home!
The key sports leagues are among the most important deals. Each NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL game has some betting action available.
There will also be opportunities to bet on international games. In the case of overseas football, Australian rules football, and the Olympics, you may be able to place bets on certain games and events — if you can handle the time difference, that is!
Of course, college sports are still a huge draw for many Michiganders. Through these in-state sportsbooks, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to bet on the University of Michigan and Michigan State games.
There are also myriad betting opportunities available for all of these games. Sports betting has abandoned smoky rooms and chalkboard predictions way back in its past. The following forms of bets for each sport will be available for most online sportsbooks in Michigan:
The rise of live betting has been one of the most critical trends in sporting betting in recent years. The way we think of betting on a single game has transformed with the help of online live betting.
Live betting is a form of proposition bet or in-game sports wagering. These bets are placed on tournaments that are already underway. Generally, three categories fall under this umbrella.
Firstly, a sportsbook can provide live bets as an extension of pregame wagers, which means point spreads, money lines, and totals can continue into the game. The only distinction is that the lines or projections adjust as the game advances.
A different type of live betting entails the ability of individuals or teams to obtain multiple milestones in the game. These milestones may be a single game, a season, or career-length achievements.
Last but not least, the sportsbook will have provided action on incomplete game outcomes. An example is that a book can have a money line on which team may "win" a specific period of the game, regardless of the result of the game.
This third bet includes all micro-events, such as individual football matches or tennis points, which can now be bet online.
The number of bets on a single match has dramatically risen as a result of live betting.
Hundreds of bets are possible in a single game. The sportsbook inevitably continues to see higher profits with increasingly high levels of betting. So, bettors can also increase their winning bets and retrieve their losing bets at a more rapid pace.
In Michigan, there is another kind of bet that merits special mention. The futures bets are great for gamblers who wish to wager, regardless of season or year.
Future bets are bets on aggregate events well into the future. Usually, before the end of the next season, you may not know your bet result.
You would essentially make a futures bet if you think the Michigan Wolverines football team is going to do particularly well. Or, if you believe the Tigers could break out and claim a wild card, (even if the season was not even in play) you could bet your money on it.
The following are conventional futures wagering options:
Super Bowl champion
NBA Finals champion
World Series champion
Stanley Cup champion
NCAA football national champion
NCAA basketball national champion/March Madness winner
Team(s) to make playoffs
Regular season win totals
Yet, don’t need to only bet on the teams specifically located within the Michigan market. There are many options if you choose to gamble on the performance of individual players. Typical futures bets in this group include the following:
Super Bowl MVP
NL/AL Cy Young Award winner
Heisman Trophy winner
MLB home run champion
Player with the most touchdowns in an NFL season
This list could obviously expand. In most cases, if the sportsbook does not list what you want, you can propose futures bets.
You should keep in mind that almost all futures bets are long shots. In general, the variables which impact the result of these wagers are so significant that even the 'favorites' are less likely to win against the field of other outcomes.
Future bets could also be ideal for the popularity of 15 minutes. Players who gamble with their hearts and choose correctly frequently make headlines, so a futures bet might be the way to do it if you'd ever really wanted to be in the spotlight.
Be mindful, though, that news reports are always about rare occasions. So, if a news crew interviews you on a winning bet, you know that your chances of winning were extremely slim in the first place.
Many states have limits on what sportsbooks and bettors may choose as their wager objects; however, Michigan has been generous to encourage nearly all sorts of sports betting.
The only exception? High school sports. In all states that have legalized regulated sports betting, it’s illegal to bet on high school sports, so it is no surprise that the same laws exist here.
The Michigan legislation is pretty descriptive about where in the Great Lake State you can (potentially) wager on games. Your options are the three Detroit casinos and the 23 tribal casinos spread across the state.
Yet, the online functionality also applies to all these sites. This means you can bet on sporting events from anywhere in the state (even during the middle of a Michigan winter).
So what about the teams you can bet on in Michigan? Let’s take a look at some of the sports you can make wagers on in the Wolverine State, including horse racing.
While the live racing opportunities in Michigan have declined significantly, there are still many ways to gamble on the ponies here.
There are pretty much all major sports leagues represented in Michigan. It also has two major public colleges with strong sports departments and many other reputable institutions with active sports programs.
Certain betting types are universal across sports. For example, any event can make a money line because there is almost always a winner. Proposition bets are lucrative in all sports events; however, the scoring pattern of some sports does not make other types of betting convenient. For example, sports that are lower-scoring, such as baseball and hockey, do not have a significant point spread.
A single NHL team is based in Michigan when it comes to hockey: The Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena, 2645 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI.
The Red Wings have a long and rich history of being one of the original NHL teams. It is one of the best teams in the league, with 11 Stanley Cup victories and consistent playoff appearances.
Michigan hockey bettors know that a Red Wings game has a "puck line" bet, which replaces the point spread. In a traditional hockey game, much fewer goals are scored than is necessary to make a spread of this magnitude. Rather, sportsbooks reset the pay-off ratio at a default 1.5 goal spread like a money line.
Michigan is hosting an NFL team for football betting: Detroit Lions at Ford Field, 2000 Brush St., Detroit, MI.
The Detroit Lions are an NFL participant with a long history. Although the team has a dedicated fanbase, its on-ground accomplishments have never driven the team over the hump. Yet the Lions are retaining an intense battle with the Green Bay Packers, and residents of Michigan can bet that the Lions will break through this year.
Moreover, Michigan is home to various football teams from Division I. In one of the Power Five conferences, two teams will be participating, including the country's biggest and most illustrious:
Michigan Wolverines: Michigan Stadium, 1201 S. Main St., Ann Arbor, MI
Michigan State: Spartan Stadium, 325 W. Shaw Lane, East Lansing, MI
Few football teams have won more titles than the Michigan Wolverines. The team is the all-time champion among all Division I teams and has multiple titles also in its record.
Archrival Michigan State also has a chronicle of success and is famous in college football circles. The all-time record of the team is fantastic for a 0.600 winning percentage and 6 national titles.
Of course, both teams will offer Michigan football bettors plenty of chances to make winning wagers. Football games tend to deliver prop bet opportunities and parlays, alongside all the normal forms of betting.
There is only one MLB franchise of Michigan: Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, 2100 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI.
Baseball, like hockey, does not have a lot of scoring in a regular game. So the "run-line" is being used by sportsbooks as they do the hockey puck-line. The standard run line spreads is 1.5, whereas the book modifies the payouts to match the game expectations.
There is a single NBA franchise that is from Michigan: Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena, 2645 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI.
The Pistons are an ongoing playoff team with three NBA championships under their belt.
The Detroit team has a reputation for tough-nosed basketball that's both aggressive and efficient and were known as the "Bad Boy" teams of the late 1980s/early 1990s.
Sports Betters now have the chance to bet on college basketball teams belonging to Michigan. In NCAA I Division for basketball, the following teams will compete:
Central Michigan Chippewas
Detroit Mercy Titans
Eastern Michigan Eagles
Michigan State Spartans
Oakland Golden Grizzlies
Western Michigan Broncos
Michigan and Michigan State are clearly the two major names on the list. In addition to the two major colleges, Michigan colleges and universities have participated in the "Big Dance" 21 times. All the teams have the opportunity to battle for one spot in March Madness.
Like football, basketball games do have a lot of scoring, so the bets that you make can be very versatile. All big betting forms are available and prop bets are popular for quarters and half of the game (and individual performances).
You'll need to open an account. After you reach the Michigan sports betting website or download the application, check for the verbiage: sign up, register, join now, or other related terms (usually in the top right) of your screen.
Once you click this button, you should be directed to a registration page. The screen will have dashes and indicators that let you know what separate pieces of personal information are required.
The information frequently requested are:
Date of birth
Social security number
Spaces for a username, passwords, and promotional codes will be provided.
Fill out the first two and search for the new bonus code for each site. Then on the online sportsbook, you'll be a happy customer. It will not take more than 10 minutes for the whole process.
You will need to deposit money into your new account after registration. No matter what your betting budget, most sportsbooks online will have at least one suitable way for you to make a deposit.
Typical methods of deposit are:
Debit cards or credit cards
Electronic checks (ACH)
Electronic wallets (PayPal, Skrill, etc.)
Bank or wire transfers
Cash (PayNearMe, retail locations)
Before you deposit in your preferred sportsbook, make sure that you check for any deposit bonus offers or deposit promo codes. Some also offer risk-free bets and first-bet matches.
Oddsseeker offers special discounts, which you will not be able to find anywhere else.
In general, Michigan internet gaming sportsbooks offer many bonuses (and you should take advantage of as many as possible). You’ll find free bets, deposit bonuses, and weekly, monthly, or holiday promos.
Yet, you’ll also notice there are a lot of terms and conditions that apply to bonuses.
Many bonuses come with several requirements that can make it more challenging to get their full benefit. This means that the bonus might not be worth the effort in some circumstances.
For example, cash awarded in the form of website credits is popular. These dollars can only be used for betting and can not be redeemed, except through the winnings.
Some rewards will also require you to play or wager, usually an amount equal to a certain quantity of the bonus.
This figure will range up to 30x, 40x, or 50x the bonus value from a single playthrough.
The conditions for playthroughs can also be subject to time limits; beyond which the bonus is returned to the sportsbook if not redeemed. Be sure that the bonuses are practical and are based on your previous playing patterns.
Here are some typical discounts or bonuses for sportsbook customers:
Platforms usually give cash bonuses for login in or entering a specific code. You also get in-site points.
The sportsbook matches a part of your deposit amount. The percentage could reach 100%, so every dollar deposited could be matched. Requirements for playthrough and deadlines are ordinary. This is often referred to as match bonuses or reload bonuses.
Dollars can only be wagered, not redeemed.
The sportsbook will compensate if you lose up to a specific value on the bet. Free bets or site credit will be obtained as redemption.
These programs are usually free to enter. They help players to augment playing points. Players can reclaim these for perks, free bets, or rewards.
Sportsbooks choose some bets to artificially adjust their payouts. Certain books pick odds boosts every day.
Although most sportsbooks are competing directly, they tend to have a common style. On most online sportsbooks websites, you can find three information columns.
Typically the left column lists the sports that you can bet on. This list column contains live links, so in Michigan, you only have to click on the required sport (for example football) to gamble on all football bets.
When you first visit the site, the middle column is what is most prominent. This column lists the most common or the most highlighted sportsbook games on the day. The lists can also include the day's odd boosts.
Finally, you'll see the bet slip in the third column. This column will show you the kind of bets you are making as you choose your bets.
Bet slips on online sportsbooks often feature an icon (such as a dollar icon). This dollar can flash as your bet advances. Click on this icon for cash-out. For the amount shown, you can settle your open bets.
For both you and your sportsbook, cash-out deals are a win-win. To safeguard against late collapses, bettors may use this. The sportsbook saves money on the payout it would have to pay if the bet were won.
In the Great Lake State, there are several choices for Michigan locals and visitors who want to bet on horse racing. States with legal online sports betting include:
Nevada Sports Betting
TVG is a top-ranked horse racing website in the United States. You can bet on almost every race in America on the site. TVG is a full-service horse racing website with advice, tactics, and forums — all available around the clock.
In the last two decades, live horse racing has declined in Michigan. The tracks are all gone except one, Northville Downs, located at 301 S. Center St., Northville, MI.
Though the track was sold a few years ago, the owners have signed a lease to stay on at the current location until 2024.
Northville Downs supports simulcast as well as live racing. From the comfort of Northville's benches, you can make bets on races across the world.
By regulation, 26 sportsbooks can currently operate in Michigan. The three Detroit commercial casinos and the 23 tribal casinos scattered around the state are all eligible to open (and be licensed) a sportsbook if they like.
To date, many locations have been able to open and maintain their retail sites. Some may even enter the online betting business of Michigan as it goes live. Meanwhile, in Michigan right now, you can bet on sports in some of these places:

Just before Christmas 2019, Michigan legalized sports betting. The Lawful Sports Betting Act was signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on December 20, making it official.
The legislation has tremendously extended gambling within the state. Michigan has also welcomed licensed online gambling, online gaming, online casinos, online poker, and daily fantasy sports along with online sports betting in Michigan.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is responsible for overseeing sportsbooks in Michigan. Operators are taxed 8.4 percent on their total sports betting receipts. Commercial casinos would have to pay an extra 1.25% city tax to Detroit, along with that percentage.
The whole expansion program is expected to raise $19 million in new revenue to the state, including an extra $4.8 million for the School Aid Fund. Sports betting in Michigan has never been so easy!
Michigan has just started its legacy of sports betting and has just launched sportsbooks online.
Due to the state's topography and weather, online sports betting in Michigan is definitely a blessing for residents. Winter storms, long commutes, and social distancing don’t matter when you’re placing bets online.
Canada (which currently has no legal sports betting) residents can also head across the border to place bets — and should increase sports betting tax revenue in Michigan. (Though, Canada may legalize sports betting soon.) Online sports betting in Michigan has never been so much fun!
