S.L. Benfica may have been close to reaching their glory as a team while contending in their last UEFA Champions League, but only one individual stood out during their campaign.

It was particularly a two-legged quarter-final encounter where they matched up with the English giants, Liverpool. Rarely advancing to this prominent stage of the prestigious tournament, this prolific individual left it all on the pitch, scoring goals in both of the home and away matches, and making sure that he made a name for himself.

Today, we know him as Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan international rose to prominence within the 2 years he spent in Portugal, easily banging 34 goals for his side in all competitions last season alone.

Tonight, he made history by making a club-record transfer fee of £85 million, signing a six-year contract with Liverpool FC. The agreement practically summarizes a target man’s obligation on the pitch of scoring goals and winning the Champions League, which advances an initial £64 million before tallying its total.

It was only a matter of time before both clubs reached an agreement, which now concludes the acquisition of 2 Primeira Liga top scorers in a space of 6 months. The English Premier League is popularly known as no walk in the park, and everyone is left to wonder if he’ll adjust. If Luis Diaz could hit the ground running from the onset, Nunez certainly could. Who is to say his impact in Portugal won't continue in the Premier League? Diaz is a fine example of pulling off that transition and making a mark in no time.

It doesn’t surprise us anymore that the 22-year-old stems from a lineage of world-class strikers arising from Uruguayan soil. That region alone continues an ongoing tendency of breeding prolific goalscorers out of the woodworks. We’ve seen in previous years how the likes of Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez, and Edinson Cavani fared and thrived in the most-respected European leagues.

On the field, it won’t take long to notice how daring of a striker he is, with the ability to overturn results in the heat of the game, applying a forward’s scoring instincts and physical qualities to match. His resume speaks for itself as a big threat inside the penalty area, needless to add that he’ll be surrounded by a dynamic frontline composed of Mo Salah, Firminho, and Diogo Jota.

Having already proven himself on the biggest stage to warrant the record signing fee from Liverpool, fans are eagerly waiting for him to put the money where his mouth is as he begins his new chapter. The first statement came out before the ink was dry, quoting “I'm really happy and delighted to be here at Liverpool. It's a massive club," Nunez told Liverpool's club website. "It's a pleasure to be here and I'm very happy to be a part of this great club. I've played against Liverpool and I've seen them in lots of games in the Champions League, and it's my style of play. There are some great players here and I think it's going to suit my style of play”.

Staying solid with his contractual agreements, he continued, "As I say, I've watched quite a lot and it's a very big club and I hope I can give everything that I've got in order to help the team. That's one of the reasons why I came here to Liverpool - to win trophies and titles. I want to win a lot of trophies at Liverpool."

The sky is the limit for Jurgen Klopp as he finesses the evolution of Liverpool. A lot of rival fans of the Merseyside became rattled by the colossal signing made with a sell-to-buy model, while other clubs are left to keep up. All amidst Sadio Mane’s transfer negotiation process, the newly-added front-liner is handed a huge task of living up to expectations of being the record transfer deal for the club.

Only time will tell if the former Benfica leading scorer will ease his way in with such a blockbuster reputation in the Premiership.
