Online New York Sports Betting Launches with a Record-Setting Weekend
Unless you live under a rock, you know that mobile sports betting in New York launched this Saturday on four different sportsbooks. Those sportsbooks are:
New York sports bettors have been anxiously awaiting the launch of mobile betting and showed their excitement this weekend once it officially went live.
GeoComply, the company that provides location services for all major sportsbooks, calculated over 17 million location checks in New York’s first weekend alone. Those 17 million location checks represent 17 million unique occasions in which sportsbook apps were opened in the state of New York.
What’s even more impressive is that over 5 million of those checks came within the first 12 hours of the sportsbooks launching. That is more than double the previous launch day record, which was 2.3 million location checks from Pennslyvania.
How Much Money Did New York State Handle?
It’s unsure how much money was actually bet in New York this weekend, but considering the 17 million location checks that were made this weekend alone, the number is expected to be high.
It’s safe to assume that mobile New York sports betting has already surpassed the $3.7 million in tax revenue that in-person New York sports betting has generated in the last 2.5 years.
Where in New York were the Bets Coming From?
It should come as a surprise to no one that a majority of the bets in NY state came from New York City. The five NYC boroughs accounted for 8 of the 17 million location checks that were seen during launch weekend.
The remaining high-populated cities followed suit: Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, and even Long Island were all major players on sportsbooks this launch weekend.
