Super Bowl Futures: Super Bowl Odds 2023

We’re on the cusp of the NFL’s wild card week - a week that will make or utterly break the postseason hopes of the league’s remaining teams. As of this moment, the league’s Playoff Picture site lists 18 teams (in both conferences) fully out of the picture for 2023, but both the AFC and NFC conference still have seven playoff spots open.

That poses a lot of questions for future bettors, as The Big Game looms in the not-too-distant future. Super Bowl LVII is just under a month away, set to kick off on Sunday, February 12th at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona. With just under a month to go, the oddsmakers behind FanDuel Sportsbook’s (near) futures markets have honed in a few favored frontrunners to:

Win the NFC and AFC conferences
Win the Super Bowl LVII game outright
Win the Super Bowl LVII MVP Award

While we don’t have a Tannen-tier sports almanac from the future to definitively know the answers to these questions, Vegas has a few reasonable guesses. So with that said, let’s take a look at a few of their favored frontrunners in each of FanDuel’s future markets.

We’ve only got five NFL teams (out of the remaining 14 total) favored below the price range of +1000 odds. All five teams here have already clinched their playoff spot, but the top two teams out of the Top 5 (Buffalo and Kansas City) may soon be set to go to war to decide who walks away the AFC Champion.

The Bills and Chiefs are separated by a slim, slim margin, +400 versus +330, and are only separated by one game in their real-world record (14-3 versus 13-3). How well both teams perform over the course of the weekend could affect where those line margins move next week.

While it isn’t yet solidified that they’ll face each other for the AFC title (with the victor advancing to face the NFC’s victor in the Super Bowl), they’re both the hungriest teams in the conference for it currently, and understandably so. The Buffalo Bills are almost certainly hungry and motivated to go from number 2 seeds to number 1 after playing through the emotional season they had, but whether or not Josh Allen will move on to face off against Patrick Mahomes is still TBD.

Moving down to #3 and #4 among the top five field, we have two more teams that also followed similar story arcs over the regular season, but in the NFC conference. Both the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers were energized by new talent, and both teams went on impressive undefeated streaks in 2022.

The Niners went 10-0 undefeated in every game started by Christian McCaffrey, and the Birds soared undefeated for the first eight weeks of the 2022-23 regular season. Right now, both teams are tied at +500 odds, but even with QB Jalen Hurts still dealing with his shoulder injury, Philly might still have a slight edge over San Francisco as NFC frontrunners in this spot.

They’re closing the regular season 14-3, relative to the 49ers’ 13-4. Both teams are closing out the season as winners in their division, but Philadelphia is heading into the postseason not just clinching a division title, but the “home field advantage” according to the NFL’s Playoff Picture site. Last but not least, in fifth place, we’ve got the first-place winners of the AFC North: The Cincinnati Bengals.

Joe Burrow, Joe Mixon, and the like narrowly missed a Super Bowl win last year, after the Los Angeles Rams beat them by only a field goal, but at +750 odds, perhaps the second time will be a charm.

At the moment, just under a month from the Super Bowl, we only have three players valued under +1000 odds and favored to win the AP NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award. Just three, and those three players in question are:

Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs (at +410 odds)
Josh Allen, quarterback for the Buffalo Bills (at +550 odds)
Jalen Hurts, quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles (at +600 odds)

Hurts was previously favored as a first-place candidate in the NFL MVP futures betting markets across many online sportsbooks, only for a shoulder injury to invariably hurt his chances. It’s still not out of the question that Hurts and the Eagles could rebound all the way to their first Super Bowl spot since 2018, but the team has dealt with some struggle while not having his talents on the field.

Since Hurts has spent a few weeks off the field, two other quarterbacks have started to shine in the MVP spotlight: Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs quarterback ended 2022 on a high note, passing for a career-high 5,250 yards, and Josh Allen helped lead The Bills to long-term success with an impressive 13-3 record in the 2022 regular season, second only to Kansas City.

It’s possible that Hurts could make a comeback through the divisional round, and subsequently, the Super Bowl. But while his odds are longer in the individual MVP market, his team’s odds are much shorter to win their conference.

We have three teams more favored than the rest out of each of their conferences, and rightly so. As of now, it’s very likely that either Kansas City or Buffalo will emerge out of the Wild Card and divisional rounds being AFC champions, and both teams might even face off for the title. Perhaps the Bengals will surprise us and be able to QB sneak their way past the divisional into the Super Bowl, but we’ll need to wait and see on that.

Moving over to the NFC, the Eagles are currently priced as the heaviest favorites on FanDuel’s future markets, priced at +160 odds. Even with their mixed performance in light of Jalen Hurts’ getting hurt, the Eagles are still the most favorable contender in this market. Even so, the Niners are still narrowly following behind them, at +200 versus +160. In third, we’ve got the bane of every Philly fan’s existence, the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys are finishing off the season 2nd place in their division, but priced at a longer shot +550 odds in this market. They have a weaker 12-5 record, weaker than Philly or San Fran, but much to the chagrin of betting Philadelphia fans, it’s definitely still possible that the Cowboys could emerge victorious. Could, but the odds are favoring two other teams’ favorability to clinch the NFC.
