2023 NFL MVP Odds: Should You Bet On 49ers QB Brock Purdy?
Back on Friday, April 29, 2022, as the NFL Draft came to a close with the highly anticipated “Mr. Irrelevant” selection as the final pick (No. 262 overall), nobody – and I mean nobody – would have predicted Brock Purdy’s success with the San Francisco 49ers.
Purdy had a nice college career at Iowa State as a four-year starter (48 games) but little was expected of him at the NFL level. The 6-foot-1, 212 (smallish) and ran a 4.8. 40 (slow) at the NFL Combine in 2022. Purdy looked like a backup at best.
Fast forward to October 2023. After injuries to starter Trey Lance and then backup Jimmy Garoppolo, the Niners turned to Purdy.
He’s been sensational.
So much so that Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports sees similarities to Tom Brady, another late-round pick (sixth round, 199th overall, 2000) who merely became the greatest quarterback of all time.
Purdy began the season as a 50-to-1 long shot to be named MVP.
Now?
He’s the number four betting favorite, ahead of Buffalo QB Josh Allen.
Wild.

On the season, Purdy is 98-for-136 passing (72.1%) for 1,271 yards, nine touchdowns and a 123.1 passer rating. He has yet to throw an interception.
Last month, I told you NOT to bet on another 49er, Christian McCaffrey, because running backs rarely win the award.
I’m telling you now to go ahead and toss on Purdy to win it.
Patrick Mahomes remains the favorite to claim his third MVP trophy and San Francisco’s schedule is much tougher than Kansas City’s the rest of the season, but if Purdy keeps this up and the Niners keep winning, the award is his.
Plus, remember that 50 sportswriters vote on the award, and writers love a Cinderella story particularly when it’s a scrappy, overlooked underdog quarterback who has become incredibly important and relevant.
