2023 World Series Odds and Rooting Favorites For All 50 States

Everyone digs an underdog, especially in baseball, and now the Baltimore Orioles are the darlings of the postseason after an incredibly successful and unexpected regular season.

Baltimore’s over/under win total on Opening Day was 77. Instead, the O’s won 101 games. That was second only to the Atlanta Braves (104) and one more than the Los Angeles Dodgers (100).

It was as impressive as it was surprising.

The Orioles have not won a playoff series since 2014 when they beat the Detroit Tigers in the AL Divisional Series.

Their last World Series title was 40 years ago (1983 over the Philadelphia Phillies).

But while they’re the fourth betting favorite to this year’s Fall Classic, they are No. 1 in the hearts of baseball fans across the country, according to BetOnline.

The site, per Jimmy Shapiro, did some deep-dive social media research based on geotagged Twitter (X) data in the last week, tracking tweets, hashtags, and direct keyword phrases about the MLB playoffs and who is rooting for whom. For example, tracking fan hashtags in every state like #BirdLand (Orioles), #AsOneATL (Braves), #BrewedForBattle (Brewers), #RaysUp (Rays),  #Ready2Reign (Astros) etc. Over 200,000 tweets were tracked.

Here’s the breakdown:

Orioles: 11 states   (Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, Virginia, West Virginia)

Braves: 10 states  (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee)

Dodgers: 10 states  (Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming)

Twins: 8 states  (Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont)

Phillies: 3 states   (Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania)

Astros: 3 states   (Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas)

Brewers: 2 states   (Michigan, Wisconsin)

Rays: 1 state   (Florida)

Rangers: 1 state   (Oklahoma)

Diamondbacks: 1 state   (Arizona)

The Miami Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays did not win any states.

It was a tad head-tilting to see the Orioles at the top of the list but there you have it.

Now back to those World Series odds. After the Twins eliminated the Blue Jays (Wednesday, Oct. 4) – their first playoff series win in 21 years – and the Rangers, Diamondbacks and Phillies each also swept away the Blue Jays, Brewers and Marlins, respectively, we’re down to eight teams.

I’ve said since May that the Braves will win their third World Series as a franchise in Atlanta (1995, 2001) and I still stand by that – just too much talent – but like plenty of other people, I’ll be rooting for the small-market Orioles (second-lowest payroll in the majors in 2023) and the Twins (17th) over the high-priced Dodgers, Braves and Astros, who are all in top 10.

Let’s root, root, root for the little guys who’ve been starving for postseason attention and victories for more than a decade or longer.

That would be refreshing.
